Her aura was warm and welcoming, and I found myself instantly at peace, as if simply being in her company had an uplifting effect. Excerpts from Part I of an exclusive, exhaustive interview Blossom gave to A Lotus In The Mud.
Navni Chawla: You have long advocated natural beauty and holistic living. How has your personal spiritual journey influenced your approach towards beauty and wellness over the years?
Blossom Kochhar: My spiritual journey and my approach to beauty and wellness have always been deeply intertwined. I was fortunate to grow up on a quiet and peaceful coffee estate, surrounded by nature and deeply rooted in tradition. My upbringing was steeped in spirituality – not just in the religious sense, but in a much broader, soul-connected way. My parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles – everyone around me lived with a sense of reverence for life and a belief that everything happens for a reason. Gratitude was a way of life. Whether something joyful or challenging happened, we were taught to say, “This too is for the best.” Even when we were unwell, the answer was prayer, presence, and faith.
That deeply spiritual environment shaped the lens through which I see beauty, not as something superficial, but as something that radiates from inner balance and peace. It also led me to aromatherapy, which I see as a bridge between nature, healing, and emotional well-being. Even my education in convent schools contributed to this gentle awareness, further nurturing my spiritual inclination.
So, yes, wellness and beauty were born in silence, simplicity, and stillness for me. It’s about aligning with nature, respecting your body, and honoring your soul. That’s what I try to bring into everything I do – and hopefully, into the lives of others too.

“A deeply spiritual environment in my youth shaped the lens through which I see beauty, not as something superficial, but as something that radiates from inner balance and peace. It also led me to aromatherapy, which I see as a bridge between nature, healing, and emotional well-being.”

Navni: Could you share a moment in your life when essential oils or aromatherapy offered you deep emotional healing?
Blossom: Aromatherapy has been a profound part of my personal and professional life, but one of the most emotionally significant times it helped me was when my mother fell seriously ill. She was in and out of hospitals and eventually passed away. But during her illness, I found sacred support in the essential oils I used to soothe her and myself. There was one blend I created, and named it Peace. It was to create a serene, comforting atmosphere in her hospital room. I used a combination of neroli (orange blossom), sandalwood, and lavender in a diffuser, which brought a real sense of calm, not only to her but to everyone who entered the room. Later, this very blend went on to become a product in our range.
I also remember using just sandalwood for her – its aroma is spiritually grounding and incredibly calming. In India, we use it often in temples and rituals. It quiets the mind and centers the soul. When she had throat issues, I turned to a healing blend of eucalyptus, peppermint, and basil. Massaging it gently on her neck brought her relief and comfort.
A particularly moving moment for me occurred when I found myself in the hospital’s small chapel. My mother was in surgery, and I was emotionally overwhelmed. I went into that space – so still, so filled with a gentle presence – and I just sat. The atmosphere was laced with the soft aroma of frankincense. That moment shifted something in me. It was peaceful, almost divine. And I’ve never forgotten how much it helped.
Even now, whenever I feel emotionally low or heavy, I visit a church or temple. Simply sitting in that sacred space, regardless of one’s religion, is healing for me. There’s something in those places, an energy of devotion and surrender, that calms the spirit. Aromas like frankincense, sandalwood, even the scent of incense – they hold you, they uplift you.
Aromatherapy, to me, is more than scent. It is emotion, memory, and spirit. It’s a balm not just for the body, but for the heart.

Navni: Which essential oil or blend would you recommend to invite calm and peace? Do you have your own daily wellness routine that keeps you grounded?
Blossom: In today’s world, where everyone is running a race and stress feels like a constant shadow, I always turn back to nature’s simple, healing tools. I call Lavender the miracle oil. It’s incredibly versatile, gentle, and deeply calming. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I apply a bit of lavender to my temples, in the middle of my forehead, and most importantly, on my solar plexus, because stress often manifests in the body as a dull ache in the stomach, shoulders, or head. Just massaging a few drops into those areas can create an immediate sense of relief.
The second oil I deeply value is sandalwood. It’s spiritually grounding and emotionally soothing. My daughter, Samantha, actually uses it like perfume. She often juggles a lot and goes through high-stress days. One day, I saw her quietly smelling her wrist, and I asked her what she was doing. She said, “I’m calming myself down with sandalwood.” That moment said everything. Nature really knows how to hold us.
As for my own wellness routine, I honour my mornings. It’s my sacred time. I begin with some form of movement, whether it’s yoga, a light gym workout, or just some gentle stretches. That’s followed by meditation or Reiki. Then comes my fresh lime juice and orange juice, followed by a good, wholesome breakfast. I truly believe that breakfast is vital – it fuels your brain, body, and energy. Skipping it leaves you depleted for the day ahead.
So yes, my morning is me-time – no compromises. It’s the space I give myself before I give anything to the world. That’s how I anchor myself and carry on with calm and focus through the day.

“Essential oils can help with hormonal imbalances, aches and pains, and even spiritual alignment. You can apply them to your chakras, use them for meditation, or simply diffuse them to shift your mood. They support the whole being.”

Navni: Can you share how your aromatherapy journey started and what made it feel like your purpose?
Blossom: It’s hard to believe it’s been over 40 years. Just the other day at the gym, someone said, “I used to come to your salon 40 years ago!” And I thought – time really flies when you’re doing what you love.
It all started when I opened my first salon, at a time when beauty products were limited. Most clients faced similar concerns – dryness, pigmentation, and dullness. So, I began experimenting in my kitchen with natural ingredients and essential oils. I was living in Wellington, New Zealand, where aromatherapy was already a well-loved practice. I’d mix oils like lavender, peppermint, and sandalwood into simple homemade creams and offer them to clients.
The results amazed me. People didn’t just look better – they felt better. Headaches eased, moods lifted, and colds subsided. That’s when I knew this was more than beauty; it was healing.
Later, when my husband left the army, I established a small factory and scaled up production. From there, it grew into training aromatherapists and full-fledged product development. When we moved to New Delhi, my husband traveled frequently, and with a young daughter at home, I chose to stay back and nurture what I had started in 1993.
What’s kept me going is love for what I do. When you enjoy your work, the energy you bring becomes magnetic – and that’s when success naturally follows.
Navni: How do you guide women, especially brides-to-be, to embrace inner beauty and choose mindful, lasting self-care over quick-fix treatments?
Blossom: Today, more than ever, we chase quick fixes without realizing that true beauty begins within. To me, beauty is holistic – it’s as much about your emotions, mind, and spirit as it is about your skin.
Stress shows up on the face through dullness, breakouts, or hair fall – but emotional balance creates a natural, radiant glow. That’s what I remind brides who feel pressured to look a certain way.
My approach begins with reconnection to the body, breath, and nature. Essential oils offer a deeper, more lasting healing effect than any instant procedure. I created a blend called Bridal Bouquet, featuring ylang-ylang, jasmine, rose, and sandalwood, to calm nerves, uplift the spirit, and nourish the skin.
For brides, I suggest starting 2-3 months ahead to prepare mindfully. We use a mix of oils, gua sha, jade rollers, facial massage, breathing practices, and Face Yoga (Face Yoga tones facial muscles and boosts circulation for a natural, healthy glow.)
While I’m not against technology, it doesn’t always age well. Natural tools, on the other hand, remain gentle, safe, and soul-nourishing.
Self-care is a journey, not a quick fix. It’s about cultivating a loving, patient relationship with yourself.

Blossom Kochhar’s ‘Glow Getter’s Guide to Everyday Skincare’ is a heartfelt, hands-on guide to natural beauty. It shares DIY recipes using everyday kitchen ingredients and essential oils to nourish your skin, uplift your spirit, and turn self-care into a soulful ritual.
Navni: How can women build a sustainable, nourishing beauty ritual that feeds both the skin and the soul?
Blossom: Aromatherapy is definitely a big part of it, but mindful self-care is broader. It’s about pausing. Listening. Nourishing. It’s also about embracing natural, intuitive practices that use what you already have around you – even in your kitchen!
That’s why I wrote my book Glow Getter’s Guide to Everyday Skincare (published by Hay House India). It offers simple recipes using fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains that you can apply to your face, hair, and body. When you combine those with essential oils, the results are magical. You’re not just applying something on your skin – you’re infusing it with intention, with healing, and with love.
When you make these recipes yourself, you connect to the process. That in itself is healing. It’s not just self-care; it becomes a ritual.
These practices also work emotionally. For example, lavender and salt are beautiful for aura cleansing. Essential oils can help with hormonal imbalances, aches and pains, and even spiritual alignment. You can apply them to your chakras, use them for meditation, or simply diffuse them to shift your mood. They support the whole being.
So yes, for me, mindful self-care is not about luxury. It’s about intention and consistency. It’s about saying – “I matter. My well-being matters.” And when women begin to treat themselves with that reverence, something incredible begins to happen – not just in their appearance, but in their confidence, their energy, and their life.

Navni: What has helped you stay grounded and aligned with your intuition during the challenges of building your brand and walking your personal path?
Blossom: I’ve always anchored myself in a higher power. Whether in personal struggles or business decisions, surrendering to the Divine has brought me clarity and peace.
But surrender doesn’t mean inaction. Life responds to movement. Once the intention is set, you must act – not someday, but now. Action turns vision into reality.
Before every big step, I say a prayer: “If this is right, show me. If not, show me something better.” I’ve seen time and again that when things don’t unfold as expected, something even better often follows. Life truly has its own wiser plan.
The key is to ask with faith, act with courage, and then let go. Letting go clears the mind, dissolves anxiety, and makes space for divine guidance. That’s when ideas and clarity flow – not from fear, but from alignment.
Of course, I have moments of doubt too – I’m human. But I always return to this truth: “It’s not mine alone to carry. Let me ask, act, and allow.” For me, that’s real leadership – surrender guided by wisdom, not just will.
