When I was growing up in Bengaluru, Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, along with his Ashram and, later, the Hospital, was a familiar part of my surroundings, even though I was never a devotee. While I have known many long-time staunch Sathya Sai devotees, including many of my family members, none were part of Sri Madhusudan Sai’s vast network. All I knew about him was that he was a spiritual leader dedicated to continuing the legacy of his master, Sathya Sai Baba.
When I recently had the chance to interact with one of the senior members of this mission, my curiosity grew. What inspired this vast network of professionals and volunteers to join forces under his leadership?
A search for answers revealed the depth of Sri Madhusudan Sai’s commitment to continuing his master’s legacy. Described as a spiritual leader, a global humanitarian, and a disciple of the late Sathya Sai Baba, Sri Madhusudan Sai is committed to continuing his master’s mission of selfless service. His mission spans the globe, touching many thousands of lives through the Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission. He says he is dedicated to sharing the wisdom of Sathya Sai Baba with the world. He emphasizes the concept of oneness – that the same divine Consciousness permeates all living beings. This consciousness, known as Sarvaṁ Brahma, is the same supreme energy within each individual—Ahaṁ Brahma.
Inside the Life and Legacy of Sri Madhusudan Sai
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s spiritual journey began at age 17 when he joined the Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning under Sathya Sai Baba. Then named Madhusudan Naidu, he excelled in academics and extracurricular activities, eventually earning a master’s degree in chemistry, an MBA, and two gold medals for his achievements. However, his true calling emerged as he embraced the mission of his master. Over the years, Sri Madhusudan Sai has become a driving force in expanding Baba’s vision through his compassionate leadership and unwavering devotion.
Sri Madhusudan Sai lives at Sathya Sai Grama, a picturesque 100-acre hamlet nestled in a valley of vineyards in Muddenahalli, a short drive from Bengaluru airport in Karnataka’s Chikkaballapur district. He has maintained that Sai Baba would frequently visit him and provide guidance, instructions, and messages for his devotees, even after the spiritual legend was no longer in his physical body. Under Sri Madhusudan Sai’s guidance, Sathya Sai Grama has flourished, drawing devotees and celebrities.
Sri Madhusudan Sai has built a network of non-denominational organizations grounded in love, inclusivity, and dignity, shaping a unique social corporation with a spiritual core. Through the Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission (SMSGHM), he leads transformative healthcare, education, and nutrition programs, serving millions worldwide.
Just a year after Sai Baba’s passing, Sri Madhusudan Sai inaugurated a school in Kalaburagi in North Karnataka, followed by the establishment of a pediatric cardiac care hospital in Nava Raipur Atal Nagar, Chhattisgarh. No matter how ordinary it may seem, any action can be elevated to a divine act with the right attitude and thought behind it. This simple yet profound philosophy guides Sri Madhusudan Sai’s life and mission.
Building his network of non-denominational organizations on principles of love, inclusivity, and dignity to continue Sathya Sai Baba’s legacy, he has created a social ‘corporation’ with a spiritual foundation, becoming one of India’s leading spiritual organizations. He believes in the transformative power of affection, which he expresses through service to those in need. His mission is centered around the ‘triple elixir’ of nutrition, education, and healthcare.
Today, the village is the epicenter for all his varied global service activities. Believing that human life is a divine gift and that ensuring good health for all is a sacred duty, the organization has set up a free 360-bed multi-specialty hospital that treats over 1,300 patients daily. This hospital also serves as the teaching hospital for India’s first free private rural medical college—Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research—inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 25, 2023.
The Mission of Love and Service
Health
Recently, while discussing his vision, Sri Madhusudan Sai said, “A string of mother and child hospitals, across the length and breadth of the country, is going to be the game changer in rural healthcare for high-quality point of care, at rural doorsteps and zero cost! The vision is to eventually establish one such center in every district through a partnership model with the governments and corporations so that no woman or child needs to travel more than a day’s journey to reach the center and get treated for free.”
Sri Madhusudan Sai and his organization have successfully assembled a highly motivated faculty dedicated to revolutionizing healthcare in rural India. The first Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital was established in Nava Raipur in 2012 to continue Baba’s vision of providing free health services to all, especially the rural and the underprivileged. By harnessing the altruism and commitment to service among medical professionals, this has grown to 12 specialty hospitals in India (five pediatric cardiac, five mother-and-child hospitals and two multi-specialty hospitals) and three hospitals abroad (Fiji, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, and a medical center in Clarksdale, Mississippi, USA) providing free healthcare. Over 32,000 free pediatric cardiac surgeries have been performed successfully through the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals.
No matter how ordinary it may seem, any action can be elevated to a divine act with the right attitude and thought behind it. Sri Madhusudan Sai says this simple, yet profound philosophy guides his life and the vision of Sri Madhusudan Sai Global Humanitarian Mission.
Education
“The children of today will be the consumers of tomorrow, and investing in them is the only way the country will prosper” – Sri Madhusudan Sai
Under the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Gurukulam Group of Institutions banner, Sri Madhusudan Sai has launched a network of 28 modern campuses across Karnataka and neighboring states, plus one school in Nigeria. Over 3,600 children study there at no cost. The education system is rooted in Sai Baba’s philosophy, which advocates the holistic development of children through a balanced approach to academics, moral values, and spirituality.
With a strong emphasis on empowering girls and women, Sri Madhusudan Sai’s institutions are breaking barriers in a country where only 1% of rural girls pursue higher education. The institutions seem to have contributed to an impressive statistic – 66% of the graduate students in the mission’s educational programs are young women, many of them first-generation learners from impoverished backgrounds!
Interestingly, the Gurukulams have students from all castes and social strata. They mandate that parents serve at the schools for 15 days every year to give them an idea of their children’s school life. Postgraduate and Ph.D. students are given stipends, ensuring their families support them. Over 95% of their PG students join the organization because they want to pay it forward.
Nutrition and Child Welfare
The Annapoorna Morning Nutrition Program began in 2012, serving just 50 children with the vision that no child should go to school hungry. As the initiative grew, the Sri Sathya Sai Annapoorna Trust was formally founded in November 2015 to expand and manage these efforts. The Trust operates on a collaborative model involving the government, society, and NGOs. Today, this flagship initiative provides 10 million school-going children with free morning nutrition in rural and underserved areas to combat hunger and malnutrition. While the Trust works on health, water, and sanitation efforts, the unifying focus remains the child’s well-being, reflecting its commitment to holistic development.
Global Human Development Centers
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s vision extends beyond India’s borders by establishing Human Development Centers in 11 countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, Fiji, Australia, Sri Lanka, and the USA. These centers, grouped under the Sai Global Federation of Foundations (SGFF), promote global harmony and service. The SGFF is a non-religious, non-denominational, and non-political organization dedicated to alleviating human suffering, promoting environmental responsibility, and creating new opportunities for those in need.
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s life and mission embody the essence of universal love and service. Guided by the teachings of Sathya Sai Baba, Sri Madhusudan Sai works hard to spread his message of oneness and compassion transcends boundaries, reminding us that we are all part of one global family—Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (One World One Family).
By caring for children, fostering a sense of unity, and addressing the needs of the less fortunate, he is paving the way for a more compassionate and harmonious world. Through his efforts, he showcases that every action can become a divine service with the right attitude.
Adoration laced with Controversy
Devotees of Sri Madhusudan Sai often express deep admiration and reverence for his teachings and humanitarian work. Some sentiments commonly shared by his followers include:
• Continuing the Legacy: Many devotees see Sri Madhusudan Sai as one of Sathya Sai Baba’s successors, continuing the mission of selfless service and spiritual guidance. They appreciate his dedication to upholding and expanding the philanthropic activities initiated by the Baba.
• Compassionate Leadership: Devotees frequently highlight his compassionate nature, noting that his actions and teachings consistently aim to uplift the underprivileged and promote global unity.
• Personal Transformation: Followers often speak of personal transformation they’ve experienced under his guidance. They describe how his teachings on love, oneness, and selflessness have profoundly impacted their lives, helping them to grow spiritually and adopt a more service-oriented mindset.
• Global Reach: Many devotees express pride in Sri Madhusudan Sai’s expansion of the reach of Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings worldwide.
• Spiritual Presence: Devotees frequently feel a strong spiritual presence in Sri Madhusudan Sai’s company or serving in his mission. They believe that his connection with Sathya Sai Baba continues to guide him and, by extension, those who follow his path.
• Controversy: While Sri Madhusudan Sai has a devoted following, detractors have expressed concerns and criticisms about him and his work. His emergence as a leader in his own right has reportedly caused division within the larger Sathya Sai Baba community. Some Baba devotees do not recognize him as a legitimate successor to Baba, leading to friction and a sense of fragmentation within the community. They question his claims of receiving direct guidance from Baba.
I can only say that these criticisms reflect the complex and sometimes contentious nature of spiritual leadership, especially in the wake of a widely revered figure like Sathya Sai Baba.
Amidst the controversies and criticisms, Sri Madhusudan Sai’s organization remains highly regarded for its substantial contributions to various humanitarian causes. He exemplifies the profound impact that one individual’s unwavering dedication to spiritual values and humanitarian service can have on the world. His organizations attract like-minded individuals, philanthropists, and corporate partners who share this unique vision for a free education model to empower rural India.
Ultimately, it is easy to see why many successful individuals and legends like cricketer Sunil Gavaskar are drawn to Sri Madhusudan Sai’s mission. The alignment of values, the visible impact of the work, the spiritual inspiration, and the chance to be part of a credible, meaningful movement are compelling reasons for their involvement. Their participation reflects a deep respect for the organization’s goals and a commitment to contributing to its ongoing success.
The Master
Sri Madhusudan Sai’s master, Sathya Sai Baba (1926-2011), is revered as a global spiritual teacher whose influence extends far and wide. Baba’s organization, with over 2,000 Sai Centers across 137 countries, is renowned for its philanthropic work in healthcare, education, and social welfare. His teachings of ‘Love All, Serve All’ and ‘Help Ever, Hurt Never’ continue to inspire millions worldwide, forming the foundation of various charitable initiatives, including Sri Madhusudan Sai’s, that have a lasting impact.

Long years before, Sri Sathya Sai Baba of Puttaprthi was pooh-poohed as a hoax miracle maker. That is till in one seminar, I met a young lad who was studying at the Puttaprthi college. Something in his eyes, his sincerity made me believe in Sai Baba of southern India, when this young gentleman said he is much beyond miracles and is a true spiritual guru. It’s such a well written article by Raji Menon Prakash, it reassures my belief after many years. I addmire her extensive research and spreading the word of this noble endeavour of selfless work by a true seeker continuing even amidst much controversy, lending a helping hand, spreading knowledge, kindness and compassion worldwide. Do continue with your work dear Raji that sustains goodness, and message of love. You inspire.
Thank you so much, Suha, especially about the experience that you have shared. I wish more people would share their experiences
After Sri Sathya Sai giving up his body, controversies of the splinter group and now the parent group too abound. In the midst of this, this comprehensive piece about the work of Sri Madhusudhan Sai in important spheres of life as nutrition, health and education gives a clear idea of the mission and working of the One world one family organisation. So much growth is such a short time is admirable. A well written piece – an eye opener.
Thank you so much Mythily
