Increasing screen time, decreasing attention span. Increasing content consumption, diminishing creativity. Increasing online interaction, weakening soft skills. What appears to be harmless engagement is quietly reshaping how young minds think, learn, and connect with the world.
It has been scientifically proven that excessive screen time fragments attention, dulls creativity, and gradually limits growth. At the same time, overexposure to social media clutters the mind with constant input, clouding clarity and making it harder to push the envelope or think beyond the content being consumed.
Together, these forces reinforce each other—social media and screen time are deeply intertwined, quietly eroding children’s creativity, cognitive development, social interaction, and communication skills. It would not be wrong to call this a pandemic of its kind—one that demands urgent safeguards.
In a decisive move, Australia became the first country to ban social media for children under 16, aiming to protect young minds from its growing impact. Many other countries are either contemplating similar measures or working on them.
Amid the ongoing discourse around such restrictions, and with National Technology Day approaching on May 11 in India, it is important to understand why children need protection from excessive screen exposure and social media use.
Mental health and early intervention
Dr. Deeksha Kalra, consultant psychiatrist at Artemis Hospitals, Gurugram, says that “Limiting social media use before age 16 can help teens’ mental health by keeping them from comparing themselves to others, being bullied online, and setting unrealistic standards.”
The impact of prolonged screen time—particularly on attention, memory, and neural development—is significant, especially during critical developmental periods when the brain is most vulnerable.
“Early childhood, especially the first five to seven years, is a highly sensitive period for brain development. This is when language, emotional regulation, attention systems, and social skills are being formed,” Dr. Munia Bhattacharya, senior consultant in clinical psychology at Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, told A Lotus In The Mud.
“In my practice, I am particularly cautious about high screen exposure in this age group. The brain at this stage learns best through sensory-rich, real-world experiences, not flat, two-dimensional input,” she added.
Beyond behavior: The neurological impact
According to the American Psychological Association, 41% of teens with the highest social media use rate their overall mental health as poor or very poor. This raises a key question: Is excessive screen time merely a behavioral issue, or does it have deeper neurological implications?
Dr. Bhattacharya says, “Prolonged screen time is not just a behavioral issue; it’s a neurological conditioning process.”

The illusion of relaxation
Whether you ask a primary school, middle school, or high school student, why they spend time on social media, the response is often similar: “It’s relaxing.”
But that relaxation comes at a cost. According to an SQ Magazine article, people’s attention span has shrunk from 12 seconds in 2008 to just 8 seconds in 2026—a period largely defined by the surge in social media consumption. In that time, content on platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts hasn’t just been consumed; it’s been accelerated, packaged, and pushed at a pace that often feels like it disappears almost as quickly as it appears.
The consequences of this shift are already visible.
“I often see children struggling to sit through even simple, slow-paced tasks like reading or studying because their brain has been wired for fast consumption,” Dr. Bhattacharya said.
Prolonged screen time is not just a behavioral issue; it’s a neurological conditioning process.
Why it’s hard to disconnect
This brings us to a pressing question: why is it so difficult to step away from screens and social media, even when we understand their impact?
“The brain starts adapting to high-speed, high-stimulation input. Constant scrolling, quick reels, and rapid scene changes train the brain to expect instant rewards and continuous novelty. Over time, this directly impacts attention span,” said Dr. Bhattacharya.
Screen addiction and memory
Beyond attention, excessive screen use also affects memory.
“When information is consumed passively and rapidly, it doesn’t get processed deeply enough to be retained. I explain this to parents as, ‘the brain is shifting from deep processing to surface-level scanning’,” said Dr. Bhattacharya.
She adds that in younger children, where neural pathways are still developing, “excessive screen exposure can interfere with how focus, impulse control, and sustained attention circuits are built.”
The decline of soft skills
In an AI-driven era, soft skills—such as communication, creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence—are essential for growth and competitiveness. Yet these are precisely the skills most affected by excessive screen use.
Dr. Kalra explains that communication develops through real interaction—eye contact, pauses, listening, and responding—while screens often replace this with one-way engagement.
“For example, a child who spends hours on screens may have good receptive language; they understand content, but when it comes to expressing themselves, articulation, vocabulary depth, and emotional expression can be limited,” she said.
“Socially, children miss out on learning subtle cues, tone, empathy, and conflict resolution. These are not things that can be learned through passive viewing,” she added.
Why boredom matters
Much like the body, the mind needs regular exercise to stay creative. But when it is flooded with constant content, original thinking inevitably takes a back seat.
So, it’s important to allow children the space to be idle—or even a little bored.
“When a child is constantly consuming ready-made content, there is less space for boredom, imagination, or independent thought.
“I often tell parents, creativity grows in empty spaces, not in constant stimulation. So the issue is not just screen time itself, but what it is replacing—conversation, play, silence, and real-world interaction,” says Dr. Bhattacharya.
The risks of over-restriction
Keeping children completely away from screens may also lead to unintended psychological or behavioral consequences.
“For example, secrecy, use of alternative platforms, and social exclusion might arise from a social media ban. Teenagers might think that a strict rule is controlling them. Some might make fake accounts and switch to platforms with fewer rules, which could put them in more danger,” said Dr. Kalra.

Identity, self-esteem, and social belonging
Time away from screens allows youngsters to “grow their identities through real-life experiences instead of getting validation from the internet,” says Dr. Kalra
“Teenagers may have better self-esteem when they focus on their own accomplishments instead of how many likes or followers they have. But some people may feel left out and alone because friends often talk to each other online.”
“The effect depends on balance; less exposure can be good, but too much restriction can make them feel like they don’t belong,” Dr. Kalra said.
Digital Reality: A necessary balance
According to UNICEF, the internet is no longer a luxury for children but a necessity—for play, communication, learning, and skill-building. As digital integration becomes more mainstream, the value of acquiring digital skills early has become increasingly apparent.
However, it also highlights the risks associated with screen time, including exposure to harmful content and abusive experiences that can impact children’s mental health.
The key distinction lies between passive consumption and active engagement.
“I usually summarize it for parents like this: early years need human interaction, later years can handle digital interaction, but even then, balance is everything.”

Screen, social media, and the role of parents
The American Psychological Association reports that 60% of heavy social media users with low parental monitoring and weak relationships experience poor mental health, compared with 25% among those with strong parental support.
Less time on social media can, in fact, support children’s cognitive development.
“Teens who spend less time on social media often have more time for schoolwork, hobbies, exercise, and face-to-face interactions. Fewer distractions can improve concentration, sleep, and academic performance,” said Dr. Kalra.
Reduced screen time can lower stress and benefit overall health.
“But without proper guidance, some may simply switch to other screen-based activities, which can dilute these benefits,” she cautions.
For older children and adolescents, moderate, guided, and purposeful screen use can support learning, exposure, and even creativity—provided it is balanced with daily responsibilities. “If peers continue interacting online, some may feel left out, leading to frustration or fear of missing out. A balanced, guided approach with open communication is usually healthier than an outright ban,” Dr. Kalra added.
With just India home to 500 million social media user identities as of October 2025—34.1 percent of its population—the scale of digital exposure among children is impossible to ignore. Therefore, debate is no longer about whether screens are present but how they are used.
Restricting social media should not be about elimination but about balance, guidance, and mindful engagement. Protecting young minds will depend on informed parenting, responsible policy, and a conscious effort to prioritize real-world experiences alongside digital growth.
