Former US Surgeon General will join leading clinicians, researchers, and community advocates who will hold a panel discussion on prevention and management of diabetes on January 21.
The virtual event titled Sweet Truths: Diabetes in the South Asian Community, will focus on the disease and related health challenges, particularly affecting South Asians worldwide.
Besides opening remarks by Dr. Vivek Murthy, who served twice as Surgeon General of the United States, the distinguished panelists include:
- Dr.Nalini Saligram (session chair) – Founder & CEO, Arogya World
- Dr. K.M Venkat Narayan – Executive Director, Emory Global Diabetes Research Center
- Dr.Ravichandran Ramaswamy – Professor, Department of Medicine, NYU Grossman School of Medicine
- Dr. Alka Kanaya – Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) | Principal Investigator, MASALA Study
Diabetes is a global health crisis, but its impact on South Asians is particularly severe. South Asians are up to four times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than people of European ancestry, often 10 years earlier. Across South Asia, over 100 million adults currently live with diabetes, a number expected to rise by more than 70% by 2050. These factors underscore the importance of the event where experts will unpack the alarming trends, share actionable insights, and discuss how we can better support diabetes prevention and management across South Asian populations.
The public service virtual program is hosted by Indiaspora, a nonprofit organization based in California that unites global leaders of Indian origin from diverse backgrounds and professions who are committed to inspiring the diaspora to be a force for good. The free event on January 21 from 7:30 – 8:30 pm ET can be joined via Zoom. Register here.
