Expanding consciousness key to personal fulfillment and peaceful society: Dr Nader

Head of the global Transcendental Meditation movement, neuroscientist Dr. Tony Nader speaks to Lotus about his new book, ‘Consciousness is All There Is’, explaining what understanding and expanding consciousness mean for individuals and the world.

Consciousness is the Source, the Course, and the Goal of Life.

Dr. Tony Nader, a Harvard-trained neuroscientist and the global leader of the Transcendental Meditation movement founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, has dedicated his life to exploring the profound nature of consciousness. As the president of Maharishi International University, he bridges the gap between science and spirituality, offering a deeper understanding of human potential.

In his latest book, ‘Consciousness Is All There Is – How Understanding and Experiencing Consciousness Will Transform Your Life’, the Lebanese-born Dr. Nader presents a compelling vision of consciousness – not merely as a product of the brain but as the fundamental essence of existence itself. His insights illuminate how expanding awareness can lead to personal fulfillment, enlightenment (moksha), and a more harmonious world.

Dr. Nader spoke to Parveen Chopra, editor and founder of ALotusInTheMud.com, who has practiced Transcendental Meditation for decades, which transformed his life and inspired his journey into spiritual journalism. In this conversation, Chopra explores Dr. Nader’s vision of consciousness, evolution, and the practical steps individuals can take to expand their awareness.

Excerpts from the exclusive interview:

Parveen Chopra: Dr. Nader, Maharishi ji often compared consciousness to sap, just as sap forms roots, leaves, and flowers, consciousness manifests everything in the universe. What is the core message of your book?

Dr. Tony Nader: Consciousness is the foundation of all existence. It is non-material, yet it is the source, the course, and the goal of life. Understanding and expanding consciousness is the key to personal fulfillment and a peaceful society. My book takes the reader through this journey – from the origins of life and evolution to higher states of awareness, enlightenment, and ultimately liberation (moksha).

If you have to give one key takeaway for readers, what would it be?

Dr. Nader: The purpose of life is to expand consciousness. As awareness grows, so does happiness, clarity, and the ability to live with wisdom. This journey is both individual and collective, shaping not only our personal lives but the future of humanity.

Your book promises to address major challenges – environmental issues, genetic engineering, and artificial intelligence. How does it provide answers to such complex questions?

Dr. Nader: The key lies in expanding human awareness. The broader our awareness, the more we understand our relationships, our place in the universe, and our future. With this expanded consciousness, we make the right decisions effortlessly.

Take Artificial Intelligence – how will it be used? Will it drive war and destruction, or will it foster a thriving, harmonious world? The same applies to genetic engineering and environmental issues. The direction we take depends on human perception and awareness.

There is a technology of consciousness, known as Transcendental Meditation, and the advanced techniques that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi brought from the Vedic tradition. These techniques expand consciousness, much like increasing the size of a container allows it to hold more. When we expand awareness, we gain the ability to find solutions, work together, and guide AI, genetic engineering, and environmental efforts in the right direction.

By deepening our knowledge of who we truly are, we naturally foster greater inclusivity, cooperation, and wisdom, allowing us to address global challenges with clarity and purpose.

With so many meditation techniques available today, TM isn’t at the forefront of people’s minds. How do you plan to make it relevant again and attract new learners?

Dr. Nader: When Maharishi introduced Transcendental Meditation (TM) to the West in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he brought the knowledge of transcending—going beyond surface thoughts to pure consciousness, the source that nourishes all aspects of life.

Initially, meditation was viewed as esoteric, closely tied to Eastern traditions. Maharishi clarified that it is a scientific approach based on understanding life and applying a proven technology. Decades of research validated TM’s effectiveness.

As meditation gained popularity, many apps and techniques emerged, offering relaxation or mindfulness. While beneficial, they often miss the depth of transcending. TM isn’t just about reducing stress or improving sleep – it enlivens the source of life, expanding consciousness and unlocking life’s fullest potential.

Now, we are re-educating people about TM’s deeper value. It’s not just about stress relief but about thriving, growing, and finding true fulfillment. Studies show that when groups practice TM together, societal benefits follow — lower hospital admissions, fewer conflicts, reduced road accidents, and even lower infant mortality.

To restore TM’s role, we launched the Consciousness Advisor Program, training individuals to guide others in using consciousness to solve fundamental challenges. TM fosters enlightenment, balance, and a world where we don’t just survive – we thrive.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi made meditation accessible to ordinary people, thereby mainstreaming it. How does it feel to step into his shoes, and how did it come about? Can you share some of your interactions with him?

Dr. Nader: I’m deeply humbled and honored to have the opportunity to represent Maharishi’s work, especially from a scientific perspective. Maharishi wanted the knowledge of TM to be seen as a science, not just a spiritual or philosophical belief system. He believed that viewing it as merely a tradition could limit its reach and impact, making it seem applicable only to certain people with specific cultural or belief systems.

He envisioned it as a universal science, one that could benefit anyone, regardless of background, education, or personal beliefs. The principle is simple: by going within and removing the stresses and strains of the mind, individuals can begin to see things more clearly and grow in their ability to achieve happiness, success, and personal growth.

As a medical doctor and scientist, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Maharishi on understanding Vedic literature, the science of consciousness, and the mind-body connection. His approach was always rooted in scientific principles, demonstrating that regardless of one’s life circumstances, consciousness development can bring clarity, growth, and happiness.

Maharishi’s teachings enabled me to serve as a bridge between science and spirituality, a role he specifically guided me in. I spent many years learning from him, gaining insights into the Vedic tradition and how to explain these principles in a scientific way. This helps illustrate that the laws of nature, including the concept of consciousness, are universal and applicable to everyone, regardless of their location or belief system. Just like gravity works the same everywhere, the laws of consciousness apply universally to help us evolve and grow.

I’ve been meditating for many years, and able to go deep within, but I’m unsure if I’m achieving a higher state of consciousness. Is there any research on how long-term meditators evolve and whether they reach higher states of consciousness?

Dr. Nader: Yes, they do. The evolution is gradual and natural, unlike a temporary, drug-induced high with side effects. It’s a process that balances the mind, body, and nervous system. Research shows brain waves becoming more coherent, even during activity, indicating that individuals are established in a state of wholeness. The results are gradual, and although the contrast may not be immediately apparent, a profound sense of inner peace, contentment, and stability emerges. Long-term meditators are more creative, productive, and happier, which points to growth in higher states of consciousness. Additionally, physiological markers such as hormones, cortisol levels, and breathing rate, as well as disease prevention and rejuvenation, further indicate that individuals are reaching more refined and harmonious states. Both subjective experiences and objective analysis support this evolution into higher states of consciousness.

“I do not doubt that India will play a large role (in world affairs). India represents knowledge, culture, and understanding – it’s not just a geographical place but a source of ancient wisdom, particularly about consciousness.”

Last year, you organized a world peace project with 10,000 people meditating together for two weeks. But wars continued in Ukraine and escalated in the Middle East. So, does meditation really affect collective consciousness?

Dr. Nader: Absolutely. We have 118 research studies that systematically demonstrate the effectiveness of these techniques in reducing conflict and improving quality of life. However, what has also been shown is that if these groups are not maintained, the positive effects diminish, and things return to their previous state. It’s like bringing light into a room – you can see, but if you remove the light, you no longer see. The light needs to be maintained, and that’s why we emphasize the importance of sustaining these groups.

What are your major projects in 2025? What are you looking forward to?

Dr. Nader: We are continuing to support the creation of large groups of transcendental meditators. We train teachers and follow each individual through the process, which takes time. For example, creating a group of 10,000 people is a process that takes several days to teach Transcendental Meditation, and it’s important to teach in person to ensure each individual has the right experience. Once they’ve learned to transcend, we teach them how to enliven the field of consciousness, which is a more advanced program. This course takes several weeks, followed by training, and includes a technique called yogic flying, which has been shown to have a powerful effect on collective consciousness. These groups are being formed, and we are confident that something great is going to happen, so we look forward to a bright future.

A Lotus in the Mud is a website for people interested in wellness and spirituality. Aside from meditation, what advice can you give to people to be happier, healthier, and at peace?

Dr. Nader: They need to live a balanced life, which includes proper diet, exercise, and daily routines. We also have programs from Ayurveda, breathing techniques, and yoga exercises. But most importantly, transcending is key. Transcendental Meditation enables you to experience the self and consciousness, thereby broadening your awareness. All these practices are helpful, but transcending is the most important for achieving the best version of yourself and making a meaningful contribution to society.

Are you hopeful that society will become more just and peaceful in the future?

Dr. Nader: I have no doubt that this will happen, and I believe that India will play a large role. India represents knowledge, culture, and understanding – it’s not just a geographical location, but a source of ancient wisdom, particularly in the realm of consciousness. The beauty of this knowledge lies in its recognition of consciousness as primary and its assertion that consciousness is all there is.

If the world views everything as physical and material, people will strive to accumulate as much material wealth as possible, disregarding the essence of life. This mindset leads to conflict, where people try to destroy others to benefit themselves. However, with a spiritual perspective—one that acknowledges a dimension of life beyond the physical—we begin to understand a greater sense of meaning and purpose. Spirituality, which is non-material, doesn’t have to be religious but recognizes a dimension beyond the physical senses. When you enliven this spiritual aspect, you feel a deeper connection, and the light of consciousness always overcomes darkness. People may search in various directions, but eventually, they will realize that nothing is working, and they will seek the light and the spiritual solution. I am confident that life will ultimately move in this direction. The future is absolutely bright. We have the technology of consciousness, transcendence, and objective proof of its effectiveness, which gives me great confidence in a bright future ahead.
