A spiritual oasis in Washington, D.C.: Lakshmi Barbara’s home of gurus and meditation

What if one of Washington D.C.’s homes quietly doubled as a living museum of Indian gurus, meditation, and spiritual healing? Meet Lakshmi Barbara Carpenter, a psychotherapist who turned her home into a sanctuary of peace, wisdom, and community.

You may have heard of museums dedicated to paintings, artifacts, rare stamps, etc., but how often have you come across a home transformed into a living museum of Indian spiritual gurus? In the heart of Washington, D.C., America’s capital, Lakshmi Barbara Carpenter has achieved that. Highly respected in the city’s spiritual circle, the ageing psychotherapist has spent much of her life promoting and sharing the teachings of Indian gurus through a space devoted to love, peace, inner joy, and mindfulness.

A home of gurus

From portraits of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Amma Amritanandamayi to intricately carved wooden statues of Hindu goddesses, every corner of her living room radiates spiritual warmth. The serene atmosphere blends effortlessly with the modern comfort of a cozy home, enriched by her welcoming presence and the soft crackle of a glowing fireplace.

Over the years, the space has evolved into a sanctuary for seekers and devotees, hosting intimate workshops, lectures, and spiritual gatherings led by visiting gurus, swamis, and teachers from around the world.

“There is no fee to attend my programs, though donations are appreciated,” says Lakshmi Barbara with a warm smile. “The voluntary contributions help cover the travel expenses of gurus.”

Her devotion and generosity are reflected in the abundance of potluck food, snacks, and herbal tea that welcome every guest to her beautiful Southern-style home perched on a hill on the northwest side of Washington, D.C., surrounded bt the woods.

Barbara holds Lakshmi, the Indian goddess of prosperity, close to her, alongside Maa Kali and Maa Durga. So, when her guru gave her the name Lakshmi, she embraced it lovingly.

She relates to her spiritual name—generous in spirit, deeply devoted, and a gracious host who has a way of making every guest feel almost royal.

Apart from her spiritual life, Lakshmi Barbara is the founder of a nonprofit organization, “Network of Light,” which she established in 1971 and through which she has continued her spiritual and community work for decades.

When asked how many spiritual masters had visited her home over the years, she smiles warmly and admits she has long lost count.

Where spirituality meets community

Julia, an American follower of Indian spirituality and a devotee of guru Adi Da, has been a regular visitor to Lakshmi Barbara’s house for workshops and spiritual gatherings for many years.

“I hope this tradition continues,” says Julia. “Barbara is not only amazing, but also her love for gurus, enlightened beings, and spirituality rubs off on us. She is a reservoir of energy,” adds Julia.

One of the recent events hosted by Lakshmi Barbara featured Dr. Manjul Kant Dwivedi (Swami Manjulanand) from Uttarakhand, a hilly northern state of India, who conducted a workshop on vastu shastra and vibration meditation. The session by the founder of the International Society of Spiritual Sciences and Vibration Meditation was both enlightening and thought-provoking.

Explaining the principles behind vibration meditation, Dr. Dwivedi said that human beings live within an “auric zone,” which can be rejuvenated through vibrational energy. “When vibrational waves rise, an equilibrium is established among different energy currents,” he explained, describing energy as “Shakti,” the Sanskrit word for divine power.

Drawing connections between nature and human well-being, Dr. Dwivedi said the same universal energy governs all life. “Water flows, fire ignites, clouds bring rain, trees grow, and so do we,” he said, adding that sunlight nourishes the body through solar rays while the wind provides “prana vayu,” energy essential for human vitality. He explained that the elements of nature continuously interact with the human body, creating a sense of energetic harmony and expansion.

He further said that both energy practices and Vastu principles can help protect individuals from negative influences and environmental imbalances.

Brendan, a longtime attendee of the spiritual gatherings at Lakshmi Barbara’s home, was among the many participants at the recent event. An astrologer who draws horoscopes using the Indian system of astrology, he follows Indian spirituality and says his guru is Kripalu Maharaj.

Brendan says his daily routine begins with pujas, followed by yoga and meditation. He praises Lakshmi Barbara for her dedication and community spirit. “She has a ton of volunteers who help organize the workshops and events,” he says, wishing her a long, healthy life.

I also attended at Barbara’s home a spiritual healing workshop led by Atma Nambi, who had traveled from Tamil Nadu in India. Speaking about emotional well-being, he said tiredness and boredom arise only when people allow them to take hold. “Be free of self-imposed burdens,” he advised.

For decades, Lakshmi Barbara has quietly transformed her home into a sanctuary where spirituality, community, and compassion continue to bring people together across cultures and generations.
