Lessons from the womb: Why growth doesn’t have to be loud

Silent work gets quiet results until it suddenly changes everything. Real transformation happens in the dark—just ask any mother.

Growth is not always loud. Sometimes, it is so quiet that you don’t even know it is happening.

I realized this deeply when I was pregnant with my now almost three-year-old, Athyasaa

For nine months, she was growing inside me.

There were days when it felt like nothing was happening. Some days, I could not feel her move. There were no visible changes. From the outside, everything looked almost the same.

What forms in the dark

But inside me, something extraordinary was happening.

Tiny hands were forming. Tiny feet were growing. Her brain was developing. Her spleen, liver, and kidney—organs that will support her for years to come—were developing. Millions of cells were coming together. A whole little human being was slowly and steadily taking shape.

I could not see most of it.

I could not measure it every day.

But that did not mean growth was not happening.

Life was working quietly to create the biggest miracle of my life: my daughter.

And I think our own growth is often like that too.

Nine months of invisible work

We usually want growth to be visible. We want results. We want to know that we are becoming better. We want some proof of whether all the effort we are making is actually making a difference.

But there are so many things happening inside us that we cannot immediately see.

A few years ago, I attended a yoga camp where a doctor said something very simple that stayed with me.

He asked us to remember the time when we were children and had bruised our knees after falling down. We would clean the wound, perhaps put some ointment on it, and get on with our day.

But what happened after that?

Our body started the healing process.

We did not have to constantly tell it what to do. We did not have to check every hour to see if it was getting better. The body simply began doing its work while we went on with our day.

Life is often like that too.

Author Megha Bajaj learned that darkness can be a cradle, silence can be a language, and stillness can be a sign of growth. Sometimes, the most extraordinary transformations happen where we cannot see them.

When nothing seems to change

There are times when we feel like nothing is happening. But the universe is at work in ways we can probably never comprehend with our limited understanding.

We wake up each day and try to grow. We are working on ourselves, reflecting, practicing, making better choices, and trying to become better versions of who we are.

And still, some days, it feels like we haven’t moved even an inch.

Tell me, if you like me, have you ever asked yourself these questions?

“How much have I really grown?”

“Why am I still here?”

“Why haven’t things changed even though I have put in so much effort?”

“Why isn’t anything working?”

I have asked myself these questions too. But today I realize… perhaps we need to ask ourselves a different question:

“What if something is happening and I simply cannot see yet? What if the greatest miracle of my life is simply on its way?”

The power of quiet transformation

Maybe you are healing. Maybe your thinking is changing. Maybe you are becoming stronger. Maybe you are slowly letting go of something that no longer belongs in your life. Maybe you are becoming the person you have been trying to become for a very long time.

Just because you cannot see growth does not mean growth is not happening.

So, do your part.

Keep showing up.

Keep learning. Keep trying. Keep taking those small steps. Consistently. Consciously.

And then give life space to do its part.

Because some of the biggest changes in our lives happen quietly.

Just like a baby growing inside a womb.

Just like a wound healing when we aren’t looking.

Just like a professional breakthrough happening when you least expect it.

Because you kept playing your part—and allowed Life to play its part.

I nurtured the little one in my womb. I fed it with wonderful food and even more wonderful thoughts and feelings. And nine months later, life gave me a moment and a miracle beyond anything I could have imagined.

Perhaps, just perhaps, everything you have been dreaming of is on its way, quietly taking shape, and believing this will make the journey a lot happier, more beautiful, and more meaningful.
