Just as the sight of an apple falling from a tree inspired Newton to discover gravity, a simple remedy of using an emerald for sinusitis suggested by his grandfather sparked Pandit R.K. Sharma’s curiosity about gemstones and energy. That experience led him to become one of India’s noted gemologists and Vastu experts, known for offering practical solutions rather than merely identifying problems.
With five decades of experience, he has figured out the interrelations between horoscopes, gemstones, Vastu, yoga, and human energy systems. In this interview with Arpana in New Delhi, he shares his journey, insights, and approach to finding solutions through Vedic sciences.
A Lotus In The Mud: According to your website, you’ve spent five decades working across astrology, Vastu, gem therapy, and spiritual sciences—what first drew you to this path, and how has your philosophy evolved?
Pandit R.K. Sharma: When I was young, I developed a sinus condition. Doctors said I was allergic to dust and advised me to stay away from dusty environments. My grandfather, Jaydev, a highly respected astrologer, told me to wear an emerald. Once I wore it, my sinus condition started to improve. However, not finding scientific reasoning, I stopped wearing the stone. As a result, my sinus problem relapsed. So, I went back to wearing the emerald, and it helped again.
That experience led me to believe that gemstones may have a genuine effect. I began researching, reading, and observing their influence through personal experimentation. It has now been 48 years since I first started exploring this field.
I received my formal education from Jadavpur University, near Calcutta, but everything I have learned about gemstones, astrology, and Vastu has come entirely through personal study, observation, and practical experience.
How do astrology, gemstones, energy, and Vastu work together in your approach to creating balance and success in a person’s life?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: When someone comes to us, we prepare a horoscope, which is a fixed energy. However, our energy fluctuates continuously due to planetary movements, bringing both positive and negative influences at different times.
Human beings are essentially frequencies, even as the universe functions like a vortex of energy. When our personal energy aligns with the energy of the universe, we experience harmony and success.
As a gemologist, my work, therefore, is tuning our energy with nature using gems. The moment we receive energy, our conscious mind is activated. The body, in turn, creates an aura, and that aura influences our surroundings—of which Vastu is one part.
Most importantly, astrology is not just about making negative predictions. I stayed away from that; I give solutions. So my role is to cure, just like a doctor.
What mistakes do people make when choosing gemstones, and why is personal guidance important?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: To prescribe gemstones, one must possess both experience and honesty. Only then can they recommend the right remedy, because every gemstone has a specific effect and influence.
For example, even if someone is advised to wear a yellow sapphire, it does not mean that every yellow sapphire will suit that individual. You should carefully check that the stone has no defects and matches the person’s energy frequency. The same applies to rubies or any gemstone.
In nature, no two stones are exactly alike; each differs in quality, vibration, and effect.
In India, many people wear gemstones, but I often advise clients to remove the stones they are wearing because they may be unsuitable or incorrectly prescribed.
Today, another challenge is the scarcity of high-quality gemstones.

You describe the human body as an “electro-chemico-bio system.” How do you use this concept to heal or solve problems for your clients?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: The human body is an electro-chemico-bio system, and as our natural energy changes, it affects our consciousness, thoughts, and emotions. For instance, positive energy often leads to better decisions, while negative energy can create confusion or imbalance. These shifts influence our mind, health, emotional state, and ultimately the decisions we make.
Our emotional state also shapes our surroundings and our level of commitment. When we feel emotionally balanced and committed, our confidence increases, and vice versa.
So how do we fix all these aspects?
Some people benefit from their surroundings, while others do not. The difference lies in the strength and balance of their aura. This is where gemstones come into the picture. Gems are used to balance the body’s energy, strengthen the aura, and positively influence one’s nature and surroundings.
That is why I do not focus just on Vastu. Often, despite Vastu corrections, a person’s problems persist because the root issue lies in the individual’s energy and nature. To cure, we must work on the person’s inner energy, and gemstones are considered an important tool in that process.
What is the science or philosophy behind your work with gemstones and energy alignment?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: My research led me to believe that energies influence six key aspects of life that I mentioned earlier in connection with the human body being an electro-chemico-bio system. If those six aspects can be aligned—or if someone is fortunate enough to have them naturally balanced—they are more likely to succeed in life. In my view, success is not a direct outcome in itself, it is rather a byproduct of these six factors being in harmony.
You link horoscope analysis with gemstone therapy while advocating yoga and Vastu principles—how does this integrated approach deliver tangible results?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: Yoga, for me, is both physical and mental wellness. Gem therapy helps energize a person, and Vastu influences the energy of a particular space. But we are constantly exposed to different environments and energies throughout the day. The energy of a room, a vehicle, a road, or a workplace can affect us all differently.
Since it is impossible to control every external influence, our energy naturally fluctuates and can sometimes become disturbed or depleted. This is where yoga and meditation become important. Through deep meditation and yogic practices, we can restore balance, calm the mind, and maintain inner stability.
In particular, regular yoga for 15-30 minutes a day helps channel the body’s energy very effectively.
How do you ensure these prescriptions are personalized?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: Clients first come with too many questions. I generally tell them to set those questions aside. I explain to them, “Right now, I am working on balancing your energy. Come back after 40 days, and you’ll see that many of the questions on your list no longer matter.”
By then, most of their concerns have naturally resolved, and only two or three important questions usually remain, which I then address. By that time, their instability and stress levels have reduced significantly, and consequently, the questions also.
How can someone identify the right gemstone for themselves?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: First, the gemstone should undergo laboratory testing. In Delhi, we have the Indian Gemological Institute & Gem Testing Laboratory to help determine if a gemstone is natural, treated, or untreated.
However, laboratory testing is not enough. A lab can confirm the type of gemstone, but subtle factors—such as slight color variations, undertones, or internal composition—also influence the stone’s effect. For example, a yellow sapphire may contain traces of blue, orange, or beige tones that can alter its quality and suitability for a person. Identifying these finer details comes through years of observation and practical experience.
What is the difference between treated and untreated gemstones?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: The internal structure and color composition of a gemstone change when it is treated. However, not everything can be identified with the naked eye. Gemological laboratories use specialized instruments to determine whether a gemstone is treated or untreated, and based on that, further evaluation is done.
A lab can confirm whether a stone is, for example, a yellow sapphire or a white sapphire, but it may not analyze the finer nuances of color composition.
Do you supply gems you recommend, or can people buy them in the market?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: I do provide gemstones to some clients, but people are free to purchase them from wherever they feel comfortable. I only advise them to have the stone checked by me once so I can examine whether its quality, color, and energetic properties are suitable for them.
Gem therapy is relatively simple, but selecting the right gemstone is a challenging process. Sometimes, a gemstone may not suit a client, and we have to replace it multiple times. At times, clients become frustrated, but I reassure them that I will eventually provide them with the right gemstone.
“I stay away from the prediction part; I give solutions. So my role is to cure. My work involves the science of tuning our rhythm with the universe using gemstones.”
What kind of clients come to you?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: Nearly 95% of my clients come through personal references. They are from business, politics, bureaucracy, entertainment, and other fields. In general, people who are sensitive to their emotional and mental state, or who feel fluctuations in their energy and decision-making, tend to seek this kind of guidance.
The most important aspect of our field is trust. I have survived because I earned people’s trust.
Critics, particularly the younger people, tend to question the scientific basis of astrology and gem therapy. Where is the evidence that these things work?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: Without complete knowledge of astrology or gemstones, it is easy to dismiss it as superstition. But in my view, the human body does not function on guesswork—there is a science behind it.
For example, why do certain people meet at a particular time in life? Why are some people naturally lazy while others are extremely active? Why are some highly sensitive while others remain unaffected by situations? Each person responds differently. In my understanding, this difference comes from variations in energy and consciousness.
Astrology attempts to study these influences. It is not a modern concept but a very ancient science. Astrology was traditionally passed down through the guru-shishya system—from teacher to student, generation after generation. Practitioners devoted years to deep learning and observation.
Today, however, many approach it superficially through short-term courses, which has changed the perception of the field.

You have written books and published a holistic wellness magazine. How do you educate people about astrology and gemstones?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: I published Eternal Solutions for many years but discontinued it because of time constraints, age, and the growing demands of my work.
Vastu, especially, requires extensive fieldwork because it is a science related to structures and spaces. It demands both physical effort and deep involvement.
What role can technology play in the future of astrology?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: General astrology can certainly be handled by artificial intelligence (AI) tools, as software can generate horoscopes and basic predictions using birth details. However, true specialization cannot be fully transferred to AI.
Every horoscope requires a unique approach and different criteria for interpretation, which come from years of experience. The same applies to Vastu. We have to use our knowledge, wisdom, and practical understanding to make the corrections.
What changes have you seen in the practice of Vastu, gem therapy, and spiritual healing?
Pt. R.K. Sharma: When I started, there were very few gemologists and Vastu consultants in India. Today, thousands of people are associated with these fields because awareness and acceptance have grown tremendously.
The growing popularity of Vastu and gem therapy also shows that many sincere practitioners have created a positive impact.
Earlier, even architects resisted Vastu-based changes. Today, many willingly collaborate with Vastu experts, showing how much acceptance has evolved.
In fact, my own office in West Delhi serves as a practical demonstration of Vastu principles, and I often encourage students to learn through direct observation and experience.
