Deva album
Deva Premal’s soul-stirring new release is a divine chant dedicated to the revered deity of Tibet ‘Tara Maa’, weaving spiritual enchantment in every note

Our introduction to Deva Premal many moons ago came through ‘Tumhare darshan ki vela’, and we became fans of her dulcet voice forever. For an Indian listening to chants of Gayatri and other mantras is ho-hum but rendered with a lovely accent and suffused with spirituality by this German-born, they are god-sent. Starting in the 1990s, she is credited with introducing Sanskrit and Tibetan mantras into the global music scene, a career capped by her album Deva (2018) receiving  a Grammy nomination for Best New Age Album.

Deva Premal’s has recently released a single ‘Tara Mangalartha Mantra (Climate Balance)’, Tibetan Buddhist chant devoted to the deity Tara and recorded with American neo-soul star and 4-time Grammy winner, India Arie. Deva explains in a press release, “We feel Mother Earth is in need of our help in these times and in the Tibetan tradition, Tara is seen as the goddess with the power to prevent natural disasters and regulate seasons. Due to these precarious and uncertain times, India and I decided to dedicate the track to the benefit of all living beings on Planet Earth and will donate all proceeds towards restoration and the cleaning of our beautiful oceans: 4oceans.com.” The Single is available on Spotify. If you want to listen to her live, Deva with her partner Miten, Krishna Das and others is leading an Ecstatic Chant week-long event in Costa Rica to usher in 2023.

It is great that DEVA PERMAL, a German by birth, believes in Indian cultures and also promotes it through her beautiful voice. Heard her on Spotify. She is simply mesmerizing. God bless her. And kudos to thelotusinthemud.com for giving her the due credit for promoting Indian culture and values by running probably the first story on her.
