BAPS unveils Swaminarayan sect founder’s murti in Sydney

BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has inaugurated the largest Neelkanth Varni murti in a yoga pose in Sydney, marking a significant moment in Australia’s cultural and spiritual landscape. Consecrated on March 6, 2025 by the BAPS head Mahant Swami Maharaj, the 49-foot ‘Tapomurti’ stands as a testament to faith, discipline, and harmony.

A Grand Dedication to Spirituality

The murti, situated in the Neelkanth Plaza within BAPS’ 25-acre precinct in Kemps Creek, Sydney, portrays Neelkanth Varni in a deep meditative posture, symbolizing detachment, discipline, and inner peace. This yoga posture, called tree pose, is revered in Hindu philosophy for its representation of intense spiritual focus and enlightenment.

Neelkanth Varni, the youthful name of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, founder of the Swaminarayan faith, embarked on a 12,000-kilometer journey across India and Nepal, practicing austerities and inspiring communities with virtues of self-discipline, service, love, and tolerance—values etched into 14 epigraphs surrounding the murti.

BAPS has shared stunning visuals of the inauguration event on its official platforms, inviting people from all backgrounds to visit and experience its tranquility.

BAPS spiritual head Mahant Swami Maharaj offers a memento of Tapomurti Shri Nilkanth Varni to the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese.

Prime Minister Albanese hailed Mahant Swami Maharaj’s message of joy and unity during his visit to the newly inaugurated BAPS Mandir.

Australian Prime Minister Honors BAPS

The historic event was graced by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who visited the newly inaugurated BAPS Hindu Mandir and Cultural Precinct to welcome Mahant Swami Maharaj and take part in the celebrations.

Greeted with traditional Hindu honors, Prime Minister Albanese was welcomed by BAPS trustees, swamis, and volunteers, offering him a glimpse into the precinct’s cultural richness and spiritual depth. He witnessed firsthand how the temple serves as a beacon of harmony, fostering inclusivity and interfaith dialogue.

In a touching moment, Anandswarupdas Swami, on behalf of Mahant Swami Maharaj, tied a nadachhadi (sacred thread) on the Prime Minister’s wrist, symbolizing goodwill and unity. The Prime Minister was also presented with a garland and a kalash (sacred vessel), marking an auspicious connection between Australia’s leadership and the Hindu community.

A Message of Unity from Mahant Swami Maharaj

Addressing a vast gathering, Prime Minister Albanese expressed deep admiration for BAPS’s contributions to Australia’s multicultural landscape, stating:

“One of the great joys of being Prime Minister is witnessing the incredible devotion of communities that have given so much to our country. His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj brings a universal message: ‘In the joy of others lies our own.’ It is an honor that you have chosen Sydney for this historic occasion.”

Highlighting Mahant Swami Maharaj’s emphasis on unity, he added, “When hearts are united, nothing is impossible.”
