ALotusInTheMud.com had the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with Daaji, exploring his remarkable journey and the impact of Heartfulness on individuals worldwide.
Lotus: You are the fourth head of Shri Ram Chandra Mission. How has it influenced your spiritual journey?
Daaji: Spirituality is a journey of self-discovery and growth. First, I am a student of spirituality. Every day is a learning experience, every experience opens up new insights. Starting the Heartfulness movement has been a blessing. It has provided all the million loving hearts in the Heartfulness family an opportunity to serve and share their gratitude for what they received. When we help others in their spiritual journey, there is a deep motivation within ourselves to deepen our spiritual practice and strive for greater spiritual growth.
Additionally, the community, support, and network have steadily grown, providing all our Heartfulness members with encouragement, inspiration, and guidance.
Lotus: How does spirituality impact global well-being in our interconnected world?
Daaji: Spirituality offers a unique perspective that transcends cultural and religious boundaries, providing a common ground for people of diverse backgrounds to come together in pursuit of a higher purpose. Practical tools such as meditation and rejuvenation can help individuals cultivate inner peace, resilience, and emotional intelligence. These qualities benefit individuals on a personal level and have ripple effects that contribute to a more
peaceful and harmonious global society.
Spirituality also highlights the interconnectedness of all beings, and through this, it inculcates qualities like compassion, empathy, and unity, which are essential for addressing the complex challenges facing us today, such as social inequality, environmental degradation, and conflict.
In today’s fast-paced and often polarized world, spirituality offers a timeless wisdom that can help us navigate the complexities of modern life with grace and wisdom.
“The heart is not just a physical organ, it is also the seat of emotions and spiritual wisdom. Heartfulness meditation emphasizes tuning into the heart and cultivating qualities like love, compassion, and empathy. By practicing Heartfulness, you can learn to connect more deeply with your heart and cultivate a greater sense of inner peace and well-being.“
Lotus: Can you share a pivotal teaching from your programs that significantly impacts participants?
Daaji: Those who attend our workshops soon realize that meditation is not an activity of 30 minutes done at the start of a day. It is a day-long or life-long practice. As their practice grows, they understand that meditation is a state of being that can be cultivated throughout the day, in every moment.
I often tell people that just before they start a new task or work, connect with the innermost core of their being, to that space in their heart, where love, peace, and purpose reside. This is an extension of meditation. What you develop during a poignant morning meditation can be maintained all day long. It is a remembrance of that peace, love, compassion, or whatever you felt. When our actions, thoughts, and ideas are guided from that place, just imagine what life would be like. Imagine how it would be if all the eight billion people in the world think and act from such a place.
This realization can be both liberating and challenging, as it requires individuals to take responsibility for their thoughts and behavior. Many practitioners respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and equanimity when they are in such a state. This is the transformative power of meditation, and this realization has profoundly impacted every practitioner’s life.
Lotus: How do you balance tradition and modernity while guiding spiritual practices?
Daaji: All spiritual practices in the Heartfulness tradition, though rooted in the ancient Raja Yoga, a form of meditation, are backed by neuroscience research. We have evidence that Heartfulness meditation reduces burnout in healthcare professionals and finance executives. It is also known to reduce the symptoms of aging by altering the length of telomeres that protect the ends of chromosomes from becoming frayed.
The Brighter Minds program is known to improve children’s cognitive abilities. These practices have existed for almost a century. But only recently has science been finding evidence to support them. So, it is important to trust our own experience. I tell seekers to use their own experience as their evidence. Use your transformation as your yardstick for the efficacy of the ancient spiritual system.
Tomorrow, there will be more scientific evidence about more important parameters, and science will call meditation the next transformational element in the evolution of our civilization. Will you wait for that evidence? Or will you be guided by your own experience and your personal growth?
Yet just because something works for you, do not be disrespectful to other systems and traditions. Be respectful and inclusive. The world has enough space for all of us to be happy and learn from each other. Spirituality is deeply personal and subjective. Striking a balance between tradition and modernity in guiding spiritual practices is about honoring each other as brothers and sisters, living under the same roof in our world. Doing so can make spiritual teachings more accessible, relevant, and impactful for a diverse and contemporary audience.
Lotus: What core messages do your meditation teaching and spiritual books convey?
Daaji: The most important message is that of inner transformation through the process of meditation that helps us connect with our innermost selves and tap into a source of lasting wisdom, joy, and peace.
Another core message is the power of love and compassion in transforming ourselves and the world around us. I believe that cultivating a heart-centered approach to life, where love guides our thoughts and actions, can lead to profound personal growth and positive change in our relationships and communities. By incorporating meditation into our daily routine, we can cultivate inner peace and clarity, enabling us to navigate life’s challenges with grace and resilience. I aspire to inspire readers to show interest in their spiritual journeys, which can lead to a more meaningful and fulfilling life for themselves and others.
For Global Spirituality Mahotsav in March, 500 spiritual organizations came together at Kanha Shanti Vanam near Hyderabad and used this largest meditation space in the world to share their teachings and wisdom with the entire world.
Lotus: Why is your organization named Heartfulness?
Daaji: I call it Heartfulness because that is the sum and substance of everything I am, everything I do, and everything that is or ever will be. The central focus is meditation on the heart. The heart is not just a physical organ but is also considered the seat of emotions and spiritual wisdom. Heartfulness meditation emphasizes the importance of tuning into the heart and cultivating qualities like love, compassion, and empathy. By practicing Heartfulness, individuals can learn to connect more deeply with their hearts, access their inner wisdom, and cultivate greater inner peace and well-being.
The name ‘Heartfulness’ also signifies the importance of approaching life with an open heart, embracing all experiences with love and acceptance. It reflects our belief that a heart-centered approach to life can lead to greater world harmony, unity, and understanding.
Lotus: What is Heartfulness meditation in essence, and how does it differ from other meditation techniques?
Daaji: Heartfulness meditation is a simple yet profound meditation practice that involves gently turning one’s attention towards the heart and experiencing the presence of the divine within. Its unique element is yogic Transmission or Pranahuti, which makes meditation dynamic. Heartfulness meditation is based on the heart as the focal point for meditation. The heart is seen as the seat of the soul, and by focusing on the heart, meditators can experience a deeper connection with their innermost selves and with the divine. Heartfulness meditation is also unique in its approach to thoughts and emotions. Rather than trying to suppress or control thoughts, we are encouraged to simply witness them without judgment, allowing them to naturally dissolve. This approach helps to cultivate a sense of inner peace and detachment from the fluctuations of themind.
A unique tool in the Heartfulness system is called Cleaning or Rejuvenation. This method removes impressions or pre-conditionings that may block the natural flow of divine energy. By regularly practising Cleaning, we can experience a greater sense of clarity, balance, and inner harmony.
